Immediate Steps to Take When a Loved One Passes at Home:

NOTE: After someone dies at home, you might want a few hours to be with that person and/or family member(s) may want to come. You can have approximately 4-6 hours with the deceased before proceeding with Step #1 below, according to Scott Green of Rose Garden Chapel, Barrhead.

#1. Pronouncement of Death

IF the death was expected (age-related, terminal illness, home care, hospice care)

  • Call the deceased’s primary doctor

IF the death was unexpected or the person is not under medical care

  • Call Emergency Services (911)

IF the deceased was receiving Alberta Health Home Care or Home-Based Palliative Care

  • Contact the Case Manager or the Palliative Care Team

#2. After Pronouncement of Death

Contact a Funeral Home

  • IF there is a pre-planned funeral home, call the one specified
  • IF no funeral home specified, you can choose one from the list below

#3. Arrange Transportation

  • The funeral home will transport the deceased from your home to their facility. If death was unexpected and you call Emergency Services (911) the police will contact the Medical Examiner, and the deceased will be transported for investigation.

NOTE: If the person dies in a hospital or senior care facility, they will usually take care of calling the family, the doctor, and the funeral home that the family has provided.
